Review: Sabina - Tortured for Christ, the Nazi Years
This film is based on a true story of faith, love, and forgiveness.
THE SHORT
So, me, my wife, and three teenage kids went and saw “Sabina - Tortured for Christ, the Nazi Years.”
Outside we saw:
The movie is PG-13 and 1 hr 55 min long. Sabina and Richard Wurmbrand start out as Jews getting married and then you get to see their conversion to Christianity and then the Nazi occupation and persecution. In short, I would say it is about FAITH and FORGIVENESS. It was worth paying to see in the movies and none of my hesitant teenagers regretted coming … although some of them surely hesitated before … so it is worth seeing.
Inside we saw:
Here is the trailer:
THE LONG
First, I do NOT think there is a clear presentation of the gospel, in short: we are all sinners, the penalty is death, Christ paid for our sins, trust Jesus Christ who died for our sins, was buried, and rose and be saved.
Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Now, the movie does show faith, love, and forgiveness in action. The verse Rom 12:20 is alluded to in a dramatic fashion.
Romans 12:20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.
We see Luke 6:37 in action.
Luke 6:37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:
Faith in God is explained to atheists in an interesting way.
The movie is entertaining. Michael gives the movie an A grade and says “A truly top notch Christian film that can stand up there with some of the best secular films of this year.” https://movieswithmichael506.blogspot.com/2021/11/movie-review-sabina-tortured-for-christ.html
At the start Sabina is worldly and wild. It is “the story of how God’s love transformed an ambitious, atheistic hedonist into one of the greatest Christian women of the 20th century.” from https://www.thethinkingconservative.com/sabina-tortured-for-christ-the-nazi-years/
The film wrestles an answer to the question “Why? Why would a Jewish Christian risk her life to help her enemies – members of the army that killed her entire family?” https://www.movieguide.org/news-articles/sabina-tortured-for-christ-the-nazi-years-tells-the-story-of-gods-transformational-love.html
At 12 votes on https://www.tributemovies.com/reviews/Sabina-Tortured-for-Christ,-the-Nazi-Years/156223/ it has a 4.33/5 stars and that is about right … it may not be 5 stars but it heads that way.
The scenery is nice and is set in the late 1930’s / early 1940’s. The director John Grooters did a good job.
Three scenes stand out in my mind … watch for them:
1) EYES – she is about to convert and she looks around and sees SIN
2) CAT – he goes out at night, you see a cat, he is going to confront the man who killed his wifes family, and I’m trying to avoid spoilers :)
3) BLACK WHITE COLOR – as a family is taken by Nazi’s … the color image turns black and white … it makes the black and white photos of today come alive … it connects the living to the black and white photos, watch for it
There are other parts that you will probably find special. The film is good enough that it will do that.
