Interpreting John 10:30 By Text Context And More Text
A case study of how scripture gets misinterpreted.
John 10:30 I and my Father are one.
If you search for proofs that Jesus is God on google then John 10:30 will be on the list of evidences as in here:
I heard Fr. Glenn Mahaffey give what I thought was a good argument that John 10:30 didn’t work for showing Jesus is God and I pulled the clip here:
facebook video of argument
In summary he is saying Jesus is one with God in the work he was doing.
John 10 is full of stuff about works and Jesus implied he was God in his works, the giving of eternal life, and implied he was the Shepherd (The LORD). By Shepherd I mean as in Psalm 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Thus, when they took up stones because Jesus implied he was God there were plenty of reasons other than saying “I and my Father are one.”
If you go to the facebook video I already linked above then you can tell people were offended by the comments underneath.
In fact Arians and trinitarians have fought over this stuff rather viciously.
You can see an example in what happened to Fulgentius. The wiki said of him and a companion “A local Arian priest had them arrested and tortured after learning the pair were preaching the orthodox Nicene teaching.” You can read about Fulgentius here. I posted about that here.
A common proof is to say they interpreted Jesus as claiming to be God in John 10:30 and give John 10:33 The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God. as proof.
I responded that the stoning threat could have been other things Jesus had said (see above italics for 3 of the possibilities). I supported the works interpretation of John 10:30 by also giving
John 17:22-3 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
Mat 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
But then if you read down you see they were going to stone, or do something to Jesus again.
John 10:39 Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hand,
What did Jesus say that triggered the second possible stoning or arrest?
Well right before it is John 10:38 But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.
The first time Jesus said “I and my Father are one” and the second time “the Father is in me, and I in him.” So we now have the response right after two similar claims. That made me feel it was wrong to think it was in reference to works in the chapter.
Now, we don’t know exactly what way Jesus and the Father are one here but we do know they probably interpreted that as a claim that Jesus was God and not works. Both times Jesus also mentioned works but each time it stopped right after the two similar claims.
How could I have avoided getting this wrong? I had scripture to support my claim and I had context to support my claim.
(1) I could have avoided the error by reading further in the chapter to the second time they were going to stone/arrest Jesus. The principle here is READ AS MUCH COMPARISON/CONTEXT SCRIPTURE AS POSSIBLE
(2) I could have been clued in by checking commentaries. You can see 5 different commentaries on this in my facebook post here. The principle here is that commentaries are not necessarily right BUT COMMENTARIES CAN CLUE YOU IN THAT YOU MIGHT BE WRONG
A wise person will learn from the mistakes of others. I hope these 2 lessons will help you and I pray that I remember them myself in the future. Thank you for reading this all the way through, peace.
